Day 5 - Wedding proposal in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands

Good times in Orkney Islands. We did some safety drills, tried on survival suits and caught up on some rest. Haley prepared a really nice lunch for all of us.

Also toured the Highland Park and Scapa whisky distilleries. To each their own, but Scapa was our favorite.

It was a short stay but on Sunday I proposed to Haley and she accepted- and it was a very special moment.

Introduction of our adventure

After a scenic day transiting the inland waterways of the Netherlands as well as the huge industrial port of Rotterdam the five person crew aboard Archimedes said farewell to our friends from Elling Shipbuilding and in a small ceremony on board, took down the Dutch flag and the builder’s temporary registration numbers and hoisted the United States ensign - thus officially starting the 3,495 nautical mile homeward journey. With such an ambitious itinerary - crossing the Arctic Circle and calling at ports within the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland - it was only fitting for us to depart ahead of a deepening low and advancing gale. Fortune was on our side and we arrived into Lowestoft, UK in driving rain and building seas around 2am - but still well ahead of the worst weather. All voyages start somewhere - with a spark that becomes an idea that turns into a plan. This one is no different. The spark was the search for the perfect boat and the plan was how to get it home. Day 1 - Heusden to Scheveningen with a twist

Today we  woke up early and set our course to Rotterdam at a nice speed of 12 knots we had an easy cruise to Hoek van Holland where we entered the North Sea. Along the way we saw the shipyard of luxury superyacht builder Oceanco and even the Arch of Noah.  During the trip we heared in the news that there was a severe storm expected during the night. Even Amsterdam airport was expected to close down. So we did some calculations, based on a semi displacement speed of 16 knots we could make it to Lowestoft before the storm would break loose. So instead of staying the night in Scheveningen we only had a very nice Fish dinner at Catch by Simonis. At 07:00 PM we set course to Lowestoft where we arrived at 02.00 AM (Dutch time). We raised the UK Visitors flag and 6 hours later we heard on the radio that In the Netherlands the heaviest summer storm ever was measured and Schiphol was closed for several hours in the morning.    This was our trip on Marinetraffic:

Day 12,13 and 14 - Destination Iceland

The crossing from Faeroe Islands was a bit lumpy as we again raced across the 380 miles keeping ahead of a developing gale. Arrived ;) Some marina views.  Exploring the rough nature. Explored Vestmannaeyjar last night and took on diesel this morning before departing for Reykjavik we plan to arrive in time for a nice dinner. Tomorrow we will visit geothermal pools for some rest, swimming and saunas.  Starlink is working very well!  Streaming movies and eating popcorn at will :)
